ARTIST NOTES: Pines of Rome is a composition containing symbols of my much loved 'second home': statue of Romulus and Remus, columns of wisteria, Roman pines found in public gardens, and architecture found along the Tiber River. Each item has special memories for me.
As a printmaker I drew the image on a zinc plate covered in acid resist then used nitric acid to eat those lines into the plate. Then I used aquatint to create the shaded areas in about ten stages. I printed it in Prussian Blue oil-based ink and used fine yellow Japanese paper with rice glue, in a technique called 'chine colle', to attach the moon to the print. It is printed on Canson 250gsm paper that you soak in water, blot and then use to print.
