Moody Blues by Janelle Bowra

Features

ARTIST NOTES: ‘Moody blues’ depicts the recovery journey of the dark times of depression. It’s hard to think about what happens when the lights go out – where there was once brightness and colour, and now the life energy has gone, replaced by pain and darkness. It might be like stepping into the depths of heaviness and darkness filled with hopelessness and helplessness. This painting imagines the inner struggle where along the way windows of light come through the craziness of depression, and eventually to find serenity and peace.

ARTIST BIO

I was born in Brisbane and have always had a passion for art, colour, texture and creativity. I was taught privately from a young age starting in oils, studied art at school and have done a number of workshops over the years in different mediums including painting, glass and ceramics. Most of the work I have done until now has been commissioned.

Art takes me to a place where I feel alive, happy, at peace, calm and free. I work with children and young people with mental health difficulties where art is used as a safe way to express inner experiences and feelings. I have made it a priority to bring expressive arts into my workplace to connect and communicate with troubled children and teens as a stepping stone toward their recovery.

Janelle’s work has been described as abstract and vibrant using very bright and pure colours. Her work involves multiple layers until she reaches a depth and complexity that represents her inner world and personality. She is a very expressive person and her paintings evolve and reflect this. For Janelle art also represents an escape from the reality of a busy life and career in nursing, which she would like to pursue full time in the future.

Bursts of colour and shape help me to express the vision of myself and others. I am excited to see what my art brings to others and love that sense of fulfillment knowing that I have contributed to the overall feel of someone else’s home.

‘Looking at your paintings I was transported by a feeling of positivity and warmth. Your art is spectacular’. (Adriana, 2019)
