WINNERS

BEST IN SHOW – 564 – Wistful by Rosemary Parrant Todman (pastel)

Rosemary has made a success of a daunting proposition – full figure with hands, feet, foreshortening and drapery – in restrained/muted colouring. The control of tones and edges is outstanding.

BEST OIL/ACRYLIC – 800 – King Valley, Autumn by Ben Winspear

A large, free and vigorous landscape. The paint handling is loose but controlled. The composition leads the viewer’s eye in a pleasing circuitous fashion. The three primary colours: red, yellow, blue, help relieve an otherwise green subject.

BEST WATERCOLOUR – 570 – Source of Light by It Hao Pheh

With a certain fragility and delicacy of handling watercolour, the artist manages to convey the light and the monumental bulk of the Venetian architecture. The understatement of the figures and gondolas is also very artistically appealing.

BEST PASTEL – 734 – Persian Princess by Liz Turner

It is not an easy thing to quickly encapsulate what constitutes Artistic Sensibility. The subtleties of placement, balance, varied and exciting mark making, looseness and control in the right measure perhaps parallel to the way a gifted musician might interpret a piece of music. This piece demonstrates well many of these considerations.

BEST OTHER MEDIUM – 567 – Adaption – Gang Gang Cockatoos by Vida Pearson

A printmaker of extraordinary skill, Vida Pearsons pictures never disappoint! They balance beautifully the design/decorative possibilities with the anatomic accuracy of the subjects.

BEST PHOTOGRAPH – 530 – Ethereal Beauty by Barbara Muhlethaler

Photography being so immediate and forceful grasps our attention mainly by the subject matter. The subtlety of this work has managed to transcend reality to a delicate piece of art.

BEST VIRTUAL WORK (ie. online) – 640 – The Rip in the Rip by Lance Ross

A maritime subject with a great sense of movement, an eye for detail and crisp confident handling of paint.

Watercolour as illustration and narrative, beautifully done.
